"If we don't hold a funeral, the deceased will come back to haunt us," people used to say.

Don't believe in ghosts? You don't have to. The deceased can "haunt" our own souls. By telling ourselves, "I should have told them, now it's too late." By never truly saying goodbye, leaving an unwritten chapter inside us—a gaping wound that no one has stitched up.

That is what funerals are for. They are meant to help us bridge the period of life with a loved one who is suddenly no longer here.
